Leadership in the 21st Century

11:15 am to 1:00 pm

Much has been discussed about what an excellent leader should look like in the 21stcentury. Many concepts have been discussed including leading change, transformational leadership, ethics, emotional intelligence, and much more. Many authors such as John Kotter, Gary Hamel, and Robert Kaplan have written about ways to achieve high energy and smart leadership that provides for rapid business transformation in difficult economic times. In the following article the five factors of empowered leadership will be discussed to provide stakeholders the everyday engagement to bring the organization closer to the mission and vision.

About our Presenter

Dr. James Baird


Dr. James Baird has a Ph.D. in Business with an emphasis in Organizational Management and a Specialization in Leadership from Capella University with distinction. He also has earned a Master of Business Administration with a specialization in Healthcare Management in 2001 from the University of Phoenix with honors. With more than thirty years of clinical, administrative, management, and leadership experience in the health care field, as well as twenty years of leadership & teaching experience at the College level, Dr. Baird is considered by many a Leadership expert. He owns and runs his own consulting firm, Baird Consulting and Motivational Speaking, having completed many projects on curriculum revision and review for such educational institutions as Excelsior College, Franklin College, Vista College, Walden University, University of Phoenix, Vista College, Southwest University and Kaplan College as well as general business consulting.  He has also completed such projects as Nursing Engagement Research with Las Palmas Medical Center, Decision-Making among EMS Personnel in El Paso County, in conjunction with Las Palmas Medical Center and University of Texas at El Paso.  In the spring of 2012, he was chosen to present at the 4th Annual University of Phoenix Assessment Expo on Student Feedback and Engagement where he received a commendation for best presentation.  In June 2012 Dr. Baird Presented on Employee Engagement and Empowerment with West Texas Federal Probation Department and presented his research findings before the State of Texas Federal Probation at the Capitol Building in Austin, Texas. Also, in 2012 he presented at the El Paso Human Resources Management Association quarterly meeting on leadership and at Project Bravo on customer service. In 2013 Dr. Baird presented at the yearly symposium for the American Administrative Professionals Association on Dealing with Difficult People He also presented at the Southern Association of Human Resource Professionals on leadership in San Antonio, TX in May 2013. In April of 2014 he presented at the Texas Human Resources Management Association conference in San Antonio, TX on leadership. In June of 2014 he presented at the Academic Forum in San Francisco, CA on Leadership Amidst Chaos. In 2015 he presented at Southwest University on Engaging Students in Learning. In October of 2016 he presented his research on Horrible Leaders at the SHRM conference in Fort Worth, TX. Dr. Baird is also a published author in several peered reviewed journals, such as The International Journal of Business Management in February 2016. In March of 2017 Dr. Baird presented his original research on “Horrible Leaders” in Fort Worth, TX at the SHRM conference. In June of 2017 Dr. Baird presented at Texas Tech in Lubbock, TX to faculty and staff on his research “Leadership Amidst Chaos”. He recently presented at “JobCon” in Dallas, Texas where he spoke on “Dealing with Difficult People.” Dr. Baird’s paper on “Horrible Bosses” was published in 2017 in The International Journal for Human Resources Management. Dr. Baird’s paper on “Coaching Employees” was published in 2018 in International Journal of Humanities, Arts, Medicine, and Sciences. Dr. Baird published his book in June of 2018 How to be a Successful Leader in the 21st Century and How to Avoid the Pitfalls of Poor Leadership by Adjusting, Adapting, Innovating, and Moving Forward. Also, his paper on “Leading Teams” was published in the International Journal of Management in August of 2019. October 2019 hosted and wrote “Leading in the 21st Century” for Martin Tire Corporation a three-day seminar at Inn of the Mountain Gods in Ruidoso, NM. 2019 Instructor of the Year Southwest University at EL Paso, TX. Dr. Baird lives in El Paso, TX.
