Diabetes Prevention & Workplace Programs

11:15 am to 1:00 pm

Type 2 diabetes is a growing epidemic in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Type 2 diabetes is expected to double by the year 2025, by which time 20% of the U.S. adult population is expected to be diagnosed as Type 2 diabetic. Rates are approximately 40% higher in the Hispanic community, which means El Paso stands to experience numbers approaching 25% or more of the local adult population. For various reasons, the medical community is not prepared to handle this problem alone and has called on public and private organizations to help attack the problem. One approach the CDC has called for is bring diabetes prevention education to the workplace.

Variations of Workplace Wellness Programs have been around for years. Many business owners and human resources professionals recognize that there are tangible and intangible benefits to having a healthier workforce but have struggled with implementing an approach that yields significant results.

This seminar will explore the growth of Type 2 diabetes over the last 40 years and the reasons behind it; the challenges and costs businesses face when it comes to the health of their workforce; reasons why a wellness program makes sense to implement for businesses of all sizes; and what best practices should be incorporated into a wellness program to provide optimum benefits to the employee's health and to the company's bottom line.

About our Presenter

Bob Mihalyov

Bob Mihalyov is the CEO and co-founder of Trinity Health Coaching, an El Paso-based company dedicated to helping people live longer, healthier lives. The company offers education and tools in the areas of diet, exercise and nutrition to individuals, small groups and businesses.

Bob spent the first 20 years of his career as an engineer and manager in the automotive industry. After losing his wife to breast cancer at the age of 43, he developed a passion to help others avoid the pain and suffering that he and his family experienced. As a result, he left the engineering field to focus on learning as much as he could about how lifestyle choices affect a person's health and sharing that knowledge with others.

After marrying Vicki in 2007, they founded Trinity Health Coaching. Vicki is a certified health coach and behavior change specialist, with nearly 30 years experience helping people improve their health through lifestyle changes. She is also a Certified Lifestyle Coach with the CDC, qualifying her to deliver the National Diabetes Prevention Program. She has studied under several doctors to learn what really causes chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer and heart disease, and what lifestyle changes will have the greatest impact on preventing or managing these and other diseases.

Bob and Vicki are the only couple to individually win the Small Business Administration's Home-Based Business Champion of the Year award (Bob in 2005, Vicki in 2007). Bob has been Carnegie Training for 2 years, served as Board President of the Children's Grief Center of El Paso, and currently serves on the board of Youth With A Mission El Paso/Juarez. He has been an active member of EPSHRM since 2017.
